If there is any of William Shakespeare's plays most suited to the spectacle that is Las Vegas showmanship, it is The Tempest. The Smith Center in a coproduction with the American Repertory Theater is staging a world premier adaptation of The Tempest at Donald W. Reynolds Symphony Park April 1–20.
At the helm of this production is magician Teller, one half of the Penn and Teller team, and award-winning Shakespearean director Aaron Posner. Both are listed as directors and adaptors. The two previously teamed up to co-direct a production of Macbeth at The Folger Theatre in Washington, D.C., which also played at Two River Theater Company in New Jersey.
Teller will provide the magic. Songs are by Tom Wait and Kathleen Brennan. Movement is by Pilobolus with Matt Kent as choreographer. Tom Nelis is cast as Prospero.
The stage will be inside a 500-seat climate-controlled tent, with no seat any farther than 60 feet from the stage.
